The term Good Samaritan stems from a story told by a writer name Luke in a section of the holy book of the Christian people referred to as the Holy Bible.
It is associated with teaching about how people should have caring for others and demonstrate such caring by helping out voluntarily when others are in distress or need.
It might be said that such moralistic behavior and feelings of compassion do not need be taught by any holy book since most normal people carry altruistic feelings towards others as a built in principle.
However if for some reason you do not possess such inner feelings there are a few steps you can take to learn how to be a good Samaritan.
- Demonstrate a kindly outward disposition. If you encounter an elderly person struggling with a large bag, give them a smile and offer to carry the heavy bag. Maybe you meet a blind person who is obviously frightened to cross a busy road. Again greet them in a friendly manner and shepherd the person across the road.
- If you meet a person suffering from a handicap who obviously needs some form of assistance, do not walk away like the many other passers by but jump in and make it clear that you will be happy to assist them. Ask the question ‘how can I help you’?
- Be the first to help of you meet up with an accident situation. Immediately call for the emergency services and then do what you can to help out. Do not just turn a blind eye and pretend it is none of your business. If you want to be a Good Samaritan then of course it is your business.
Always respect the rights of the other person and be careful with what you do. There are times when performing such altruistic acts can backfire on occasions!
